Making My Timber Earrings

My new collection of earrings are made using recycled timber. The timber I am currently using was once the leg of a table and when I saw the grain and colour in the timber I wanted to use it for something special. I started playing with some ideas and here we are: recycled timber earrings.

The first challenge was to get the table leg cut down into thin slices which I could then use. I had a friend help me with this step as we needed a drop saw to cut these down and it was delicate work getting them the right thickness.

I can then cut down the thin slices into the shapes I want. I only need to score them with a Stanley knife and metal ruler so I can then ‘break’ each piece to size. They get a quick sand to neaten the breaks.

From here I can make the holes far all the joins using a very fine file.

Each piece is sealed with some avocado oil which also brings out the colour and grain in the timber.

Each studs has a surgical steel posts glued to the back and will later be finished with a nickle free clutch back.

Each of the pieces are attached together with little jump-rings and in some designs lengths of chain as well.

And here is the finished product all ready to be put onto cards and go off to their new homes.

New Timber Earrings

Over the last 12 months I have been very quiet here. With my move from one side of the world to the other it has taken me some time to get settled. I have started working on a new collection of jewellery which I have been making from recycled timber. These new pieces are quite different to my previous medium, but I have been enjoying working with a different material and creating more minimal designs. Here are some of the earrings I have been making.

Melbourne Workshop

I started making my own cleaning products after reading ‘Essential Oils for Beginners’. Since then I have been researching and experimenting with various recipes to make cleaning products which are natural, easy to make and that really work. I wanted to share this knowledge with others, so while I was visiting Melbourne in January I ran a workshop at in.cube8r in Fitzroy on how to make your own cleaning products using natural ingredients and essential oils.

It was a fun night and everyone got to take home their own natural window cleaner, dish washing liquid, multipurpose cleaner, scouring solution and hand soap.
